The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra: “Four Spirits” with Abel Selaocoe
Abel Selaocoe’s expansive imagination knows no bounds — the SPCO’s newest Artistic Partner embraces singing, dancing, composition and improvisation equally in joyful and powerful music-making. His recent cello concerto, “Four Spirits”, is drawn from his South African roots and seeks to create a communal experience with the audience alongside works by two of Selaocoe’s many musical influences — Norwegian jazz instrumentalist Marius Neset and Russian composer Igor Stravinsky.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra: Jasmine Choi Plays Mozart’s Second Flute Concerto
Celebrated world-wide for her virtuosity and technical prowess, flutist Jasmine Choi makes her SPCO debut in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2, balancing soaring melodies with striking precision in what she describes as “a cross between familiarity and freshness.” In a dramatic shift, Choi also tackles her own arrangement of Pablo de Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, a showpiece originally written for violin, transformed to showcase Choi’s masterful range of the flute.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s EXPRESS CONCERT: Cassie Pilgrim Plays Bach’s Oboe d’Amore Concerto
Beginning with Jean-Féry Rebel’s chaotic “big bang” from the Baroque era and ending with Olivier Messiaen’s multi-colored and haunting music from the “Quartet for the End of Time”, written while he was a prisoner of war, this program — curated by SPCO Principal Oboe Cassie Pilgrim — explores themes of space and time, creation and destruction as well as Johann Sebastian Bach’s divine concerto for oboe d’amore.
