Comedy and tragedy intertwine in this program of theatrical music including Ludwig van Beethoven’s dramatic Coriolan Overture and Felix Mendelssohn’s lighthearted music for William Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Night’s Dream". Haydn’s "Il Distratto" Symphony repurposes music from a comedic play about a gentleman so absent-minded he nearly forgets his own wedding!

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra: Haydn’s “Fire” Symphony
In another strand of the temporal theme woven throughout the 2024.25 season, SPCO violinist Nina Tso-Ning Fan lights a fire in January, leading the orchestra in “Winter” from Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. Works by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and Max Richter from the 19th and 21st centuries offer additional interpretations on the passage of time, driving toward the titular centerpiece of this program — Franz Joseph Haydn’s spirited “Fire" Symphony.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra: Mozart’s 40th Symphony with Dmitry Sinkovsky
"Bounding with talent and oozing charisma" (“Pioneer Press”), violinist and conductor Dmitry Sinkovsky returns to the Twin Cities this spring to lead the SPCO in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famed 40th symphony. The dramatic passion of the symphonic work makes for a stunning finale of a concert featuring Baroque works by Mozart's predecessors, George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi.
