From traditional dance and live music to hands-on activities and sweet treats, Minneapolis’ annual Sister Cities Day invites visitors to experience cultures from around the world—without leaving the city. The free celebration returns to Nicollet Island Pavilion this Sunday, July 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering a recognition of the global partnerships that have connected Minneapolis with other communities across the world for more than 60 years.
Representing eight of Minneapolis’ 12 sister cities, this year’s event features cultural performances including Japanese taiko drumming, Chilean folk dance, Swedish music, a Chinese lion dance, Mexican folklórico, and more traditions from Iraq, Kenya, and France. Guests can also explore cultural displays and create their own complimentary ice cream sundaes.
The celebration will also recognize two milestone anniversaries in Minneapolis’ Sister Cities Day program: 65 years of partnership with Santiago, Chile, and 35 years with Tours, France. Minneapolis City Council member Michael Rainville, Honorary Consul of Chile Teresa Palacios Olson, and representatives from the Minneapolis-Tours Sister City alliance will participate in a ceremony honoring the long-lasting relationships.
“Our sister cities relationships remind us that meaningful connections begin with people,” said Melvin Tennant, president and CEO of Meet Minneapolis, in a recent release. “Sister Cities Day is an opportunity to celebrate the cultures, traditions, and friendships that enrich Minneapolis while recognizing the lasting partnerships we’ve built with communities around the world.”
