Nestled in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis, the Central Avenue Cultural District has long been home to many cultures, reflecting the immigrant communities that have called it home over the decades. From its early days as a hub for Eastern European settlers to its status as a thriving multicultural destination, Central Avenue has always been a place where worlds collide. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a first-time explorer, there’s always something new to discover in this district.

A food tour throughout the Central Avenue Cultural District should not be missed. For a unique twist on a familiar favorite, don’t miss Football Pizza, where you can indulge in Afghan-style pizza. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike love Francis Burger Joint for its entirely plant-based menu. For those seeking Mexican food, Maya Cuisine is a local favorite.

Finish the tour off with a stop at Fair State Brewing Cooperative. This community-owned brewery offers a rotating selection of craft beers in a welcoming taproom atmosphere. Be sure to get a pretzel from Aki’s Bread Haus, a traditional German bakery next door.

Where to Experience Art

Art is engrained in every block throughout the district – from the vibrant murals to gallery showings, art demonstrations, and festivals – this area is home to some of the city’s most talented creatives.

For people looking for live music, PILLLAR Forum Café hosts live music most nights and has an art gallery that features monthly art shows. The Central Avenue Cultural District lies within the Northeast Arts District, which hosts Art-A-Whirl, the largest open studio tour in the country. The annual event is a great way to tour private galleries, connect with artists, and walk away with a few unique pieces.
