Home to one of the finest encyclopedic art collections in the country, Mia houses more than 83,000 works of art representing more than 5,000 years of world history. Highlights of the permanent collection include European masterworks by Rembrandt and Poussin; modern and contemporary paintings and sculpture by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian and Stella; as well as internationally significant collections of decorative arts, Modernist design, photographs and Asian, African and Native American art. Free admission.
Located in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, or Mia as it’s called by locals, is the biggest arts educator in the state. Its collection consists of more than 83,000 objects spanning 40,000 years and features a comprehensive survey of Asian and African art in addition to contemporary art, textiles, sculptures, world-famous paintings, seasonal exhibitions andhistorical works by Monet, Matisse, van Gogh and Rembrandt. From free admission to visitors’ ability to bring cameras, laptops and easels into the museum, Mia truly is a museum for the people.
