Editor’s Picks: NA Drinks for Dry January

Where to find mocktails, non-alcoholic beers, and ready-to-drink offerings this month

Whether you’re going all in on Dry January or prefer a “damp” approach, local bars, restaurants, and retailers have you covered when it comes to mocktails. From new twists on bar favorites to ready-to-drink options, here are just a few of Minnesota’s NA offerings to sip on this month.

Breva Bar & Grill

Perfect for a night out in downtown Minneapolis, Breva offers several mocktails to pair with its New American cuisine. There’s the Yuzu Tonic (Seedlip Garden 104, yuzu, tonic), the Not Too Spicy (Clean Co. tequila alternative, fresh lime, agave), and the On the Wagon (Seedlip Spice 94, fresh lime, ginger beer).

Bauhaus Brew Labs

Any conversation about NA beverages would be remiss not to include Minneapolis’ Bauhaus Brew Labs, which made history as the first Minnesota brewery to can NA beer since Prohibition. Its Nah beverage line includes four six-pack options—Helles, Cirtus Berry Sours, Hoppy Brews, and Dark Brews—plus the just-announced mixed pack of 12.

Earl Giles Restaurant and Distillery

Known for its extensive lineup of craft cocktails and house-made syrups and mixers, it’s no surprise that Earl Giles boasts a large assortment of tasty, zero-proof beverages on its menu. Try the Sauna Slammer (cranberry-hibiscus, grapefruit-lime, “gin” botanical blend, Formula 12 tonic), Garibaldi Square (sparkling orange juice, filtered Garden Variety bloody mary, beet juice, sal de gusano), a fruity seltzer, or ginger beer.

Hai Hai

Grab a table at Hai Hai this month to try James Beard Award-winning chef Christina Nguyen’s Southeast Asian cuisine and a tropical mocktail (or two). Spirit-free offerings include the Mot (NA bitter lemon aperitif, passionfruit, lime chamomile), Hai (citrus fruits, lychee, aloe, NA cava), and Ba (sugarcane juice, ginger, NA citrus spirit, galangal-piña orgeat).

Indeed Brewing Co.

Grab some friends and share a pint of NA beer in Indeed’s cozy Northeast Minneapolis taproom. You’ll find Pils Zero, which is a classic NA lager, as well as the popular NA Pistachio Cream Ale.

Marigold

No one does Dry January like Marigold, Minnesota’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop with storefronts in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The shelves are stocked year-round with NA wine, beer, spirit replacements, and ready-to-drink cocktails, plus mixers, elixirs, and syrups.

Starling

Head to Edina for dinner and NA drinks at Starling this month. The mocktail lineup includes the Shiso Mojito (shiso, lime, soda), Paloma (grilled grapefruit, galangal, lime, soda), and Red Starling (NA spirit, ube, cranberry, lime).

Surly Brewing Co.

Surly has two NA options to choose from: Sparkling Hop Water is a hoppy near-beer without grains, sugar, or calories, and Outlook Good is a pale “ale” centered on aromatic hops and a sturdy malt backbone. You can purchase these in cans or find them on tap in Surly’s Beer Hall.
