Winter inevitably leads to dry skin from the lack of humidity in the air. If you find your skin feeling tight, dry, or flaky, here are some tips from our board-certified dermatologists at Dermatology Consultants.
- Use a gentle or hydrating cleanser to wash your face morning and night. A hydrating cleanser will clean the skin without sacrificing moisture.
- After cleansing, use hyaluronic acid before your moisturizing cream. This is an added step to boost hydration. Hyaluronic acid traps moisture in the epidermis which can then be locked in with a thick moisturizer such a CeraVe moisturizing cream.
- Consider limiting harsh ingredients such as retinoids or retinols to every other day, or decreasing the strength of your prescription retinoid.
- Use a humidifier in your bedroom overnight.
- This may be a no-brainer, but stay hydrated internally too! When we get dehydrated, our lips get chapped and our skin gets drier.
Lastly, just because it’s cold out, doesn’t mean you can skip your sunscreen! The winter sun can still cause sunburns, but we’ve got you covered. Check out one of Dr. Ali’s favorite sunscreens for wintertime: the Vanicream Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30. It contains ceramides to retain moisture and combat the dry winter air as well as a gentle, non-irritating physical UV blocker zinc oxide. And don’t forget your lips! Dr. Turnbull swears by the SuperGoop Lip Shield for outdoor winter activities.
