There’s nothing better than finally shedding those extra layers of clothes you needed this winter and exploring great travel destinations right here in Minnesota. And what better place to explore than Red Wing, located just 55 miles southeast of Minneapolis, right on the Mississippi River? This historic town offers everything you’re looking for in a day or weekend trip including gorgeous river bluffs, hiking and biking trails, museums, exquisite dining, a brewery, winery, and of course, Red Wing Shoes.
Here’s a closer look at what Red Wing has to offer.
Outdoor Adventure
Red Wing’s riverfront is the perfect place to explore if you love the outdoors. There are hiking trails for all skill levels. Barn Bluff, the city’s most popular bluff, offers spectacular views from multiple overlooks and is worth the hike up it’s nearly 400-foot peak. Unable to hike to Barn Bluff? No problem! Drive up to Memorial Park when the roads aren’t snow-covered for a city overlook unlike any other.
Interested in less rugged terrain? The 19.7-mile paved Cannon Valley Trail is a great choice for those interested in walking, running, biking, or cross-country skiing if there’s still snow. This trail does require a wheel pass, which you can buy for $5 a day or $25 for the year.
Historic Museums
Red Wing is rich in history, so it’s no surprise that it’s home to six museums. The Red Wing Shoe Museum gives you a look inside the City’s most iconic company and houses the World’s Largest Boot. Check out the Goodhue County Historical Society Museum for activities your kids will love. The Aliveo Military Museum (open weekends or by appointment) offers an in-depth look at our country’s military. The Pottery Museum of Red Wing features clay products manufactured from the 1800s through 1967. The American Ski Jumping Museum gives you a look into the heritage of the sport. The Red Wing Marine Museum takes a look at boat and motor business along the river.
Shopping and Dining
Throughout Red Wing, there are ample boutique shopping options including art galleries, antiques, books, clothing, home décor, and more. You’ll likely get hungry from all that shopping and riverfront exploration. Lucky for you, the city boasts many wonderful restaurants including The Veranda, The Port, and Jimmy’s Pub, all of which are inside the iconic St. James Hotel. Kelly’s Tap House Bar & Grill and Bayside Tap & Steakhouse offer great outdoor dining with views of the river.
