When the air turns crisp and the landscape begins to transition into autumn colors, the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota become an inviting destination for a fall getaway. Scenic drives, wildlife, small-town stops, and seasonal events make fall a good time to explore the region with fewer summer crowds and cooler temperatures.

Start with the scenery. Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway winds through towering limestone cliffs and forests, where fall color contrasts with the pines. In the southern Black Hills, the roads through Custer State Park offer another chance to take in the changing landscape, with opportunities to spot bison and other wildlife along the way. Nearby, Wind Cave National Park pairs underground exploration with trails through the park’s rolling prairie and surrounding pines. For a different perspective, head east to Badlands National Park, where the rugged formations create a striking backdrop against the autumn sky.

Fall is also a great season to get outside. Cooler weather makes hiking and biking more comfortable, and the George S. Mickelson Trail offers 109 miles of nonmotorized trail through the Black Hills. Along the way, you’ll find forests, streams, canyons, and small communities that make it easy to build a full day around the trail.

For a taste of local culture, make time for the communities scattered throughout the Black Hills and Badlands. Rapid City offers museums, galleries, public art, and local dining. Further into the Black Hills, communities such as Keystone, Hill City, and Hot Springs in the southern hills, and Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood, and Lead in the northern hills, showcase historic sites, local shops, galleries, and attractions.

Fall also brings its own calendar of experiences. Seasonal festivals, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, harvest events, and Halloween celebrations take place throughout the region. While you’re planning your getaway, fall is a season worth visiting the Black Hills and Badlands. Build your itinerary around scenic drives, outdoor adventures, and seasonal events, and leave some room for the spontaneous stops along the way.
