THC-infused beverages have been gaining popularity in Minnesota since the law legalizing them took effect on July 1st. Trail Magic, an early industry leader, is now opening the state’s first dedicated THC-beverage taproom for four days from December 15-18. The pop-up taproom located at BŪCH Fermentary & Taproom (formerly Able Brewing) will feature over 30 THC-infused beverages from 16 Minnesota companies, including well-known breweries Bauhaus, Bent Paddle, Fair State, Surly, Modist, Lakes and Legends, and Fulton.
“We are excited to highlight the breadth and quality of products being made safely and responsibly right here in Minnesota,” said Jason Dayton, Trail Magic Co-Founder. “Cannabis beverages give Minnesota consumers a social alternative to alcohol and many are made by the same companies we know and trust to make our craft beers, ciders, and wine.”
This focus on local products might remind some of the growth of craft beer over the past decade. As with craft beer, and the passage of the “Surly Bill” in 2011, the Minnesota state legislature is likely to play a significant role in the future of this nascent industry. Cannabis regulation, and potential legalization of recreational marijuana, are reportedly on the DFL’s agenda this year after the party gained control of the legislative branch in the November election. Dayton says lawmakers should consider the hemp-derived THC industry that has emerged since July when crafting new legislation.
This uniquely Minnesotan approach to cannabis is only possible because the THC in these products is derived from hemp, not marijuana. While hemp and marijuana are both cannabis plants, hemp is federally legal, allowing alcohol producers who hold federal licenses to also make hemp-derived THC beverages. Importantly, these new products are non-alcoholic.
The concept of a THC-beverage taproom emerged as more and more products joined Trail Magic on store shelves. Consumers will be able to enjoy beverages on-site or purchase products to take home. In addition to THC-beverages, Trail Magic’s taproom will feature non-alcoholic beer from Bauhaus Brew Labs, food trucks, educational opportunities, and tastings. The taproom is open to anyone over 21 and will be located at BŪCH Fermentary & Taproom, 1121 Quincy St. NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413 (formerly Able Brewery). Hours are 5-10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and noon-10 p.m. on Saturday and 12-6 PM on Sunday.
