Minneapolis nears the top of national rankings for bike-friendly cities. And for good reason! Our trails are extensive, varied, and lead to adventure for most of the year – despite the weather. Northrop neighborhood, near Lake Nokomis in south Minneapolis, has a leg-up over most of Minnesota. It’s Dwight Gronlund, owner of Nokomis Cycle, and a true believer that biking is still fun. Residents of Northrop know that Dwight is their go-to guy for all-things-bike. Nokomis Cycle offers certified repairs and service, new and used bicycles, good gear, and a heaping side of kindness and fairness.
This summer Nokomis Cycle celebrates 25 years in business, a labor of love that began in 1994 when Dwight opened his repair shop. Since that time, bike culture has grown in Minneapolis—as a means of transportation as well as for health, wellness, and connection. All the while, Nokomis Cycle has been a destination—for bicycle products and services and to simply browse.
Not only does Nokomis Cycle offer the best and latest in new bikes for serious riders, Dwight showcases a passion of his: custom bicycle crafting using select frames and parts. You really should stop in to see what that’s all about. A full range of services available includes tune-ups and overhauls (we all know the wear and tear of winter on our treasured bikes stored in our garages), tire repairs, handlebar conversions, and safety advice. Friends of the store requested electric bikes, so Dwight stocks the Electra GO! and Raleigh iE, with full technical support.
This summer, Dwight and his friendly staff will host monthly events at the store on 46th and Bloomington, featuring meet-ups, giveaways, discounts, and special tributes to the community that supports the store and helps to make Minneapolis one of the great centers for bicycle culture.
“It’s been a rewarding 25 years serving the Nokomis area and bike lovers throughout the Twin Cities. Even after 25 years, it’s still fun to share with people that it’s still fun to ride a bike,” says Gronlund. “This community has given so much to Nokomis Cycle, so this summer is really a celebration of the people we’ve come to know, the familiar faces and the first-timers who walk in the door. Some have been cycling their whole lives, and some are new—but everyone ends up loving it.”
The Nokomis Cycle website is an invaluable resource for a calendar of 25th anniversary events and trail maps enjoyed by cyclists of every level. Its Facebook page details the regular Monday Night Rides (for all riders) and anniversary event announcements. Fans of Nokomis Cycle are also following the store’s Instagram and Twitter pages. But most of all they love to stop in for the connection with Dwight and his trusted staff—who plan to keep supporting local cyclists for many years to come. Give them a call at 612-721-2959.
