There’s something brewing in Lowertown—and it smells like caramel rolls and grilled cabbage. After opening to strong acclaim last August, the team behind 1881 by Lake Elmo Inn is reintroducing the Union Depot restaurant under a new name: 1881 Eating House. While the name may be new, the mission remains deliciously the same: serve up elevated comfort food, craft drinks, and warm hospitality in a historic setting.
The new name draws inspiration from classic “eating houses” of the 1800s—welcoming spots where locals and travelers alike gathered to share a meal and some good company. Owner John Schiltz says the shift reflects a desire to create something even more approachable while keeping the culinary experience top-notch.
And the timing couldn’t be better. 1881 Eating House is rolling out a new weekend brunch menu, now available Saturdays and Sundays, that blends comforting classics with a few signature twists. One highlight: the Lake Elmo Inn’s famed caramel rolls, now gracing brunch tables in Lowertown. Also on the menu? Lamb burgers, tuna poke, beet salad, and a grilled cabbage dish that’s earning rave reviews.
Later this spring, the restaurant will unveil its Plaza Patio, a stylish new outdoor dining space on the Union Depot’s North Plaza. Designed for everything from relaxed farmers market brunches to pre-Saints game drinks, the patio is set to become a must-visit spot for soaking up the season.
1881 is also leaning into the neighborhood’s cultural rhythm with Station Sounds, a bimonthly event featuring live local music and all-night happy hour specials every second and fourth Thursday. It’s another reason to stick around for craft cocktails, exclusive bites, and some serious Lowertown vibes.
With a new name, expanded offerings, and that signature Lake Elmo touch, 1881 Eating House is more than just a rebrand—it’s a refreshed invitation to gather, savor, and stay awhile.
