Exceptional Brain Tumor Expertise

Mayo Clinic’s neuro-oncology team provides compassionate, innovative, and timely care for people with brain tumors

Navigating a brain tumor diagnosis can be overwhelming. Fortunately, Mayo Clinic’s world-class neuro-oncology specialists have experience treating even the rarest types of brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors, allowing them to confidently guide their patients through uncertain times.

Recognized as a global leader in neurology, neurosurgery, and cancer care, Mayo Clinic uses its unique multidisciplinary approach and cutting-edge technology to provide accurate answers the first time—often offering treatment options other hospitals can’t.

Dr. Ugur Sener, chair of the neuro-oncology program at Mayo Clinic, says Mayo’s team-based care sets it apart. “For brain tumors, a neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist, and neuro-oncologist will be involved in every single patient’s care. Even our pathologists and radiologists are specialized in CNS tumors. Everyone involved has dedicated expertise.”

Specialized Experience Matters

At Mayo Clinic, patients benefit from teams who’ve seen a wide variety of brain tumors. This deep experience means that subtle symptoms and rare or complex tumor types are more readily recognized and addressed with the most effective treatment option, whether it be surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a novel approach.

“We see many types of brain and CNS tumors, even those that would be considered rare at other places, like high-grade and low-grade gliomas,” says Dr. Sener. This level of experience helps his team deliver better care. “When we engage our Mayo Clinic neuropathologist for tumor diagnosis, for example, they’re often able to very specifically characterize tumors, which helps us refine the treatment plan to achieve the best possible outcome.”

Innovative Tools and Treatments

Patients at Mayo Clinic have access to advanced technology designed to make diagnosis and treatment safer and more precise. Powerful diagnostic tools like 7-Tesla MRI and intraoperative MRI mapping help surgeons plan and perform procedures with greater accuracy. Mayo Clinic also offers proton beam therapy to more precisely target tumors and minimize radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue.

Ongoing research at Mayo introduces new therapies, as well—some of which are available through clinical trials. Dr. Jian Campian, a neuro-oncologist, is developing novel immunotherapeutics that use a patient’s own immune system to fight cancer cells. Dr. Sani Kizilbash, another neuro-oncologist, is doing pioneering work in the field of molecularly targeted therapy. Mayo Clinic’s neuro-oncology team has also participated in multiple new drug approvals. “Our team is very comfortable with these novel therapies that can offer patients more hope,” says Dr. Sener.

Expedited Care

Timely answers are important, especially with brain tumors. Mayo Clinic offers coordinated, multidisciplinary appointments that bring together neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, and radiation specialists—sometimes all in a single visit. The scheduling team works to minimize delays, so most patients can begin their care journey within days.

“Our focus is on removing barriers and providing answers as soon as possible,” Dr. Sener says.

Mayo teams are also exploring ways to bring care closer to home, using telehealth and remote assessments. “For some trials, people can participate from home,” shares Dr. Sener. “Our patients may be very sick or live far away, making traveling for in-person visits difficult. We’re always looking for ways to make care easier and more accessible.”
