IndiaFest returns to the Minnesota State Capitol grounds on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., bringing thousands of people together for a full day of food, performances, family activities, and community spirit. Hosted by the India Association of Minnesota (IAM), the free festival celebrates India’s Independence Day while giving Minnesotans a chance to experience the country’s rich traditions in one place.
What began as India Day in 1983 has grown into an event that now welcomes more than 25,000 attendees each year. After quickly outgrowing its original home at Landmark Center, IndiaFest moved to the State Capitol grounds 17 years ago, where it continues to expand. Throughout the day, visitors can watch live dance and music performances; browse the bazaar filled with handcrafted goods, jewelry, and clothing; explore cultural exhibits; and enjoy activities and games for kids. Of course, one of the biggest draws is the food, with vendors serving everything from savory street food to traditional desserts.
IAM board president Mangala Acharya shares her advice for first-time festivalgoers. “Make sure to try at least five new foods,” she says. “Also, get a beautiful henna design on your hands, buy fantastic jewelry and clothes at the bazaar, watch the fervor of the parade and flag hoisting, and make sure you experience the energy and euphoria of the Bollywood segment that kicks off at 6 p.m.” The Bollywood celebration closes out the evening, turning the Capitol grounds into a giant outdoor dance floor.
“My favorite part of IndiaFest is the people,” Acharya says. “I love interacting with the guests, the vendors, the cultural participants and the attendees. It always warms my heart to see the officers and the entire board come together to make sure this event is a success.” Founded in 1973, the India Association of Minnesota has spent more than 50 years building connections through culture, community, and service.
“IndiaFest gives the community an opportunity to come together and celebrate so many things—the beautiful Minnesota summer, community, music, food, culture from ‘back home’—and gives everyone the chance to connect with their culture and heritage in a very low-pressure setting,” Acharya says.
