The warm summer months are packed with celebrations—Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July… and National CBD Day.

Wait—Aug. 8 doesn’t ring a bell? You’re not alone. National CBD Day is still a relative newcomer, first celebrated in 2018 to help the public better understand hemp-derived CBD (that’s cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating cousin of THC). Back then, CBD was still a mystery to most people, quietly gaining popularity in states where it was legal. Then came the 2018 Farm Bill, which made hemp products federally legal, and CBD went from niche wellness item to mainstream must-have in record time.
The goal of National CBD Day is to break down misconceptions, highlight the plant’s versatility, and show how it can be part of everyday wellness—whether you sip it, snack on it, or smooth it onto your skin.
Here in Minnesota, CBD comes with its own set of unique rules. As of May 31, 2023, retailers may only sell hemp-derived cannabinoid products in the form of an edible or beverage for human or animal consumption, or as products clearly labeled for external use only. Minnesota law also allows the sale of hemp-derived THC (including delta-9 and delta-8 THC) and certain alternative cannabinoids—but with strict potency limits:
- Per serving: no more than 5 mg THC (delta-9 or delta-8), 25 mg CBD, and 25 mg CBG
- Beverages: up to 10 mg THC per container (two servings)
- Edibles: up to 50 mg THC per package (10 servings)
These “lower-potency” hemp edibles and beverages are only sold to adults 21-plus, but unlike in many states, Minnesota allows them to be sold outside of dispensaries—meaning you can find them at grocery stores, bars, liquor stores, restaurants, and other registered businesses. In fact, as of December 2024, more than 4,300 Minnesota businesses were registered with the Office of Cannabis Management to sell hemp-derived cannabinoid products.
So, how should you celebrate National CBD Day? Start local—Minnesota brands are leading the way in creativity, quality, and compliance. It’s the perfect excuse to explore new products, learn the latest laws, and support homegrown makers.
