They chew on our shoes. Leave “gifts” on the carpeting. Track mud through the house. Shed on the furniture. And break our hearts into a million little pieces when the time comes to say goodbye.
So, why do we own pets when they add to responsibilities and expenses that crowd our already-hectic lives?
To put it simply, because they make us happy.
Their unconditional love, boundless enthusiasm, and wagging tails capture our hearts. We can’t begin to imagine a life that doesn’t include a furry family member. They can make the worst day even a little better just by crawling into your lap or nuzzling their nose against your leg.
In Perham, MN, a thriving community in Minnesota’s lake country where Small Town America is alive and well, there’s a company that has been feeding Duke and Duchess for more than 55 years. NutriSource Pet Foods was launched by Darryl “Tuffy” Nelson and his son, Kenny, in 1964. Now, Kenny’s son, Charlie, is at the helm—working side by side with generations of other Perham families to produce high-quality pet foods with passionate customers across the country.
Whatever a four-legged best friend may need, NutriSource likely has a product to match. NutriSource diets support sensitive skin and stomachs, heart health, and nutrition for both young and old. Whether you’re looking for wholesome grains, grain-free, large breed, small breed, super performance, or weight management formulas, NutriSource has wet and dry recipes for all of the above.
Walk through the NutriSource plant in Perham and you’re immediately struck by the level of cleanliness and technology in the facility. Designed from the ground up to exceed the expectations of its customers and the stringent requirements of the pet food market, the facility features the most technologically advanced equipment and complete process segregation that ensures the safest food. By the end of 2020, a $65-million dog and cat treat manufacturing facility will be operating in Delano, MN—where NutriSource’s manufacturing footprint will continue to grow.

You won’t find NutriSource or any of its products at mega pet stores or big-box retailers, however. The company has long been committed to independent pet and feed stores, where there’s a greater focus on health and nutrition. As a family-owned company, NutriSource also believes in supporting locally owned businesses whose owners live, work, and provide jobs in their communities.

NutriSource is equally committed to giving back. “Rocket” is a new staff member helping young patients at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital take medicine, relax during anxious moments, walk after surgery, and offer support and affection during medical procedures. The golden retriever with years of advanced specialized training is the hospital’s first-ever facility dog, all made possible by a $250,000 gift from NutriSource.
There’s something deeply comforting about knowing that in this time of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty that we have companions like Rocket and those in our own homes who offer their wet noses and warm hearts. (Even if they chew up our new sneakers.)
