5 Hikes to Try This Summer (Without Going to the North Shore)

Scenic trails and stunning overlooks are not exclusive to the North Shore—check out these hiking hot spots throughout the state

As Minnesotans, we all know that the North Shore is known for its scenic trails and untouched wilderness, making its stretch of land along Lake Superior one of Minnesota’s most well-known places to hike. However, fewer people venture to the various hiking trails and picturesque viewpoints in other locations across our state. Whether you don’t want to drive to Lake Superior or just want to check out some new destinations, the following list of hikes around our scenic state is yours to explore (or send us your favorite hiking spots!).

Blue Mounds State Park

Located in southwestern Minnesota, a few hours from the Twin Cities, Blue Mounds State Park is home to a stunning array of prairie colors and wildflowers. From leisurely walks along the quarry to exhilarating uphill climbs through a bur oak forest, there’s something for every hiker. Amid the tall grass prairie, you might just spot some bison.

Big Spring Falls

Halfway between the Twin Cities and Duluth lies a tranquil oasisBig Spring Falls in Sandstone. A part of Banning State Park, this beautiful waterfall is a sight to behold. The walking trails along the Kettle River offer a peaceful escape from the city, making you feel as if you’ve been transported to the serene Grand Marais. And the best part? It’s just a 90-minute drive from the Twin Cities.

Quarry Park & Nature Preserve

This park in the greater St. Cloud area was previously the site of 20 granite mining quarries. Now, the 684-acre Quarry Park & Nature Preserve is home to miles of paved trails with views of woodlands and open prairies. Along with its hiking options, the park is popular for cliff jumping, swimming, fishing, and rock climbing.

Frontenac State Park

Frontenac State Park

Frontenac State Park is just over 60 miles outside the Twin Cities, offering views of Lake Pepin along the Mississippi River. Home to over 260 species of birds, this state park is perfect for bird watching. Its array of habitats, from prairie land to wooded forests, provides diverse scenic views for hikers. Be sure to bring your binoculars for ample birding opportunities, including a large population of bald eagles.

Hidden Falls

Hidden Falls, less than 60 miles from the Twin Cities, is a must-see waterfall destination in Nerstrand State Park. The waterfall lies nestled in a forest of towering trees along a 1-mile loop, creating a tranquil refuge from the outside world. For visitors looking for longer hikes, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park has several trails for exploring.
