I have a nephew named Thomas who loves trains. As you can imagine, Tommy is quite a big Thomas the Tank Engine fan. Last summer, he and his sister got to ride on Thomas the Tank Engine in Seattle and they loved it. This summer, that same opportunity is coming to Duluth.
Day out With Thomas is designed to offer families a chance to visit with the beloved No. 1 blue engine. While kids may have fallen in love with Thomas the really useful engine through the PBS TV series, the character actually made his debut in 1946 in the second book of The Railway Series by Reverend Wilbert Awdry, who created the Thomas and Friends characters for his son.

Day out with Thomas: The Mystery Tour 2012 in Duluth (July 27-29 and August 3-5 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.) includes an approximately 25-minute ride with a full-size Thomas the Tank Engine (train departs hourly), games and activities, an opportunity to meet Sir Topham Hatt, and more family-friendly fun.
Duluth’s North Shore Scenic Railroad, site of the event, regularly offers daily 90-minute train excursions through Duluth. Other options include a six-hour Duluth to Two Harbors ride, the Family Pizza Tour, the Elegant Dinner train, and the Murder Mystery Train. While flooding did impact the Duluth area, the city is still open for business and trains are on schedule.
