The St. Paul Planning Commission voted unanimously March 6 to approve a conditional use permit allowing developers to transform the vacant historic structure into a new assembly hall and fitness center. The project comes from Outlaw Development, whose partners include former professional boxer Dalton Outlaw, veteran developer Shawn Devine, and St. Paul native and former NFL wide receiver Michael Floyd.

Located at 928 W. Seventh St. in the historic Schmidt Brewery Historic District, the 1937 building once served as a keg house for the adjacent Schmidt Brewery before reopening as Keg & Case Market in 2018. The food hall closed last year after its final tenants departed.
Under the new proposal, about half the building would become a flexible event venue capable of hosting boxing matches, concerts, fundraisers, and private gatherings. Plans also include a fitness facility, a juice and smoothie shop from Life Juices, and potentially a future coffee shop or restaurant.
Architects say the project will focus on interior renovations only, preserving the building’s historic exterior while giving the longtime neighborhood landmark a new purpose. If completed as planned, the space could host up to 600 guests for standing events or about 400 seated attendees.
For West Seventh—one of St. Paul’s fastest-evolving corridors—the redevelopment could mark a fresh start for a building that has long been part of the area’s brewing and entertainment history.
