331 Salon

A Twin Cities hair industry icon passes the shears

Decades as a stylist and salon owner, Jon Oulman is taking a bow—sort of. The man known for his outsize personality and dandy style recently shuttered his eponymous salon in northeast Minneapolis to focus on cultural programming at his other business, the Amsterdam Bar & Hall (though he’ll continue seeing longtime clients at his studio in St. Paul). Oulman has passed the shears to the husband-and-wife team of Kevin Raheja and Brittany Bui, whose 331 Salon opened in Oulman’s former space, on the second floor of the building that houses the 331 Club (run by Oulman’s son Jarret). Bui, who was formerly a manager of Ficocello’s Hair Salon, handles daily operations of the salon, which offers full-service hair and waxing services, while Raheja heads up marketing (his colorful resumé includes a stint as an Alaskan crab fisherman and co-founder of Chefmixer, a website that connects chefs and dinner-party hosts). They intend to carry on Oulman’s legacy of enriching the Northeast arts district, down to hanging original artwork by Northeast-based painters Caitlin Karolczak and Nicholas Harper on the walls.
