Minneapolis has long been known as an arts destination, from its legendary music scene to its thriving community of photographers, makers, and creatives. This fall, the city will be the home of a brand-new festival that brings music and visual art together.
On Sept. 18-20, MODE by Flickr will transform downtown Minneapolis into a celebration of photography, music, and visual storytelling. The inaugural festival will unfold across Loring Park, Nicollet Mall, Peavey Plaza, and other downtown locations, inviting attendees to experience the city as they move between concerts, workshops, exhibitions, and guided photo walks.
The event is designed to encourage collaboration between photographers, musicians, and creators of all experience levels. “Photography and music have always been at the forefront of culture,” says Ben MacAskill, president and COO of SmugMug and Flickr. “Bringing artists like Vince Staples, Tycho, and Cory Wong to the MODE stage is a true reflection of Flickr’s commitment to creativity, craft, and community.”
The newly announced music lineup also includes Washed Out, Infinity Song, and Balthvs, with outdoor performances taking place throughout the weekend at Loring Park. They’ll join an impressive roster of photographers, including Sandro Miller, Matthew Rolston, Jonathan Mannion, Chris Burkard, Brooke Shaden, and Penny De Los Santos.
Art programming ranges from portrait photography conversations and commercial photography workshops to skate photography sessions, astrophotography classes, gallery exhibitions, and community photo challenges that use Minneapolis itself as the classroom. Festivalgoers can spend an afternoon learning new techniques, browse exhibitions and artist talks, then cap off the day with a concert or guided night photography walk.
