Whether you favor the juicy tartness of First Kiss apples, dance with the SweeTango, or hop on the popular Honeycrisp bandwagon, you are sure to find something delicious at Minnesota apple orchards. They are once again ready to satisfy your cravings for delicious apples, baked treats, and a fun outing. When planning your outing, make sure to do a little research to check the offerings at orchards. Some offer pick-your-own apples and others pick the fruit and have them available for purchase in their store. Many orchards also sell baked goodies such as freshly made doughnuts sprinkled with delicious cinnamon sugar (worth a wait in line for these), fresh apple pie, and frozen pies you can take and bake at home. Many orchards also feature pumpkin patches and activities such as hayrides, mazes, live music, food trucks, and more so you can make a day—or weekend—of it.

Apple Fun Fact

Did you know that since the apple breeding program began in 1878 at the University of Minnesota, 29 apple varieties have been released? These include favorites such as Honeycrisp, First Kiss/Rave, State Fair, SweeTango, and Zestar. Some University-developed varieties are no longer available, but you can find all the current U of M varieties here, many of which you can purchase from local orchards.

Apple Harvest Timing

If you are hoping to pick or purchase a certain apple variety, call ahead to confirm what’s ripe for the picking. Early ripening varieties such as First Kiss, SweeTango, McIntosh, and Zestar should be on hand. Honeycrisp and Haralson are usually ready by mid- to late September. In October, find the later season varieties such as Honeygold, Regent, Fireside, and Keepsake. Or, just go to an orchard and enjoy whatever apples are available. You are bound to have a delicious time either way.

Find an Orchard

Here are some popular spots to visit, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture offers a searchable map on its Minnesota Grown website that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for, whether you want to head to a nearby orchard, plan a day trip, or an apple-centric weekend getaway. Please check with individual orchards as many have a no-pet policy.

Storing Apples

Refrigerate apples as soon as you bring them home to slow ripening and maintain flavor so they can keep from four to six weeks. They might look pretty in a bowl on the counter or table, but this way you’ll have them on hand to enjoy on their own or in a variety of recipes (see below).
