What’s Up

Travail Collective has taken over Italian Eatery (ie) from former owners Eric and Vanessa Carrara, reviving the beloved South Minneapolis restaurant, which closed last June. Diners were pleased to see it reopen as ie by Travail in February. New chef-owners Mike Brown, Bob Gerken, and James Winberg—the James Beard Award semifinalist team behind Travail Kitchen and Amusements, Pig Ate My Pizza, Nouvelle Brewing, and Graze Food Hall—serve the authentic Italian cuisine patrons have enjoyed for the past decade, while adding their own unique touch. “Our goal is simple—preserve the heart of ie while adding our own creative twist,” says Brown. “We’re thrilled to bring back beloved menu favorites, along with new additions curated by our owners and ie culinary team.”

What’s Cooking?

Sip a Negroni or wine, then dive into authentic Italian appetizers like the new arancini—crispy rice balls with Parmesan cream—and classic meatballs and mussels. The shaved root salad features a refreshing lemon vinaigrette with mint and candied pistachios. Fans of mushroom cappelletti will enjoy its return, featuring whiskey-aged shoyu in house-made pasta for rich umami flavor. The agnolotti with fennel-forward chicken and duck sausage is served in a lemony cream sauce. Other offerings include classic spaghetti, cavatelli with Bolognese, and new caserecce with lamb. The half chicken entree, topped with salmoriglio, is complemented by mains like short rib and New York strip, all enhanced with unique sauces. Save room for the light Crostata al Limone, tiramisu, chocolate olive oil torte, or ice cream.

What’s the Vibe?

The comfortable atmosphere of the original Italian Eatery is familiar yet elevated, blending a nonna’s cucina with a big-city vibe. The exposed beam ceiling, gentle lighting, cozy booths, and warm wood tables create a welcoming space for 130 diners, while the open kitchen showcases the culinary magic. The bar opens to an outdoor patio that seats 70. The Travail Collective will embrace Italian influences while crafting fresh pasta and fostering a sense of community through food and wine.
