Sleeping Above the Shoreline at North Shore Camping Co.

Forested tält sites and Lake Superior views made our spring staycation a rustic, quiet, and cozy retreat

My husband, our dog, and I recently spent two nights at North Shore Camping Co., and it was exactly the quiet reset we didn’t know we needed. Nestled in the forest along the ridgeline just above Lake Superior, our walk-in tält (a luxury tent) provided a perfect blend of rustic charm and thoughtful comfort. Even in mid-May—when the air was crisp and the temperatures dipped (much) lower than expected—the tent kept us warm and cozy thanks to ample blankets, a gas stove, and a beautifully designed interior that made us feel right at home in the woods.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear this isn’t your average campsite. The staff had thought of everything: campfire cooking gear, lanterns, even dog-friendly touches (no extra pet fee!). The views from our site were stunning—we could see glimpses of Lake Superior through the trees, especially striking at sunrise. Each tält is spaced out enough to give guests plenty of privacy, which added to the peaceful, immersive atmosphere.

We spent one day exploring the nearby North Shore gems—Black Beach, with its unique volcanic sand, and the rugged, waterfall-filled trails of Tettegouche State Park. The location made it easy to enjoy these scenic spots without spending too much time in the car.

We came prepared with eggs, bacon, and steaks, planning to cook over the fire pit—until we found out there was a burn ban in place due to nearby wildfires in Brimson. Thankfully, the camp stove provided at our site made it easy to still enjoy hot meals. One evening, we gave ourselves a break from camp cooking and ordered takeout from Cove Point Crossings just across the street—perfect comfort food after a long day outdoors.

The on-site Base Lodge was another highlight, offering heated restrooms, hot showers, coffee, snacks, games, and a small library. We didn’t use the on-site saunas this time, but we’re already planning a return trip.
